About me: You can call me Mar (pronounced like “m-air”) or Mary, I don’t have a preference! I use they/them & she/her pronouns interchangeably. With a professional background in disability services, I am a firm believer in accessibility & trauma-informed approaches in the therapeutic environment and enjoy learning how to make that happen for each individual client. I come from a family of performing artists, so I also appreciate artistic expression and creativity in the therapeutic environment. Also, yes I am holding my cat, Roo, in the photo (I have four cats and one dog in total)!
Specializations: I specialize in working with Queer & Trans clients, clients recovering from high-control religion, and clients navigating life with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or ADHD. I especially enjoy working with clients with chronic health conditions, clients with mixed cultural heritage, clients with complex trauma histories, and clients who feel like they don’t “fit-in” with neuro-normative society. I am Deaf-allied and experienced in working with American Sign Language Interpreters and Deaf Interpreters in therapeutic settings.
My approach: I am curious, transparent, and sometimes silly. My goal is to work in collaboration with clients to select interventions that work for their unique circumstances and needs. I value disability theories such as Spoon Theory, identity-centering theories such as Relational-Cultural Theory & Queer Affirmative Psychotherapy, and person-in-environment models such as the Power Threat-Meaning Framework. I utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Trauma-Informed adaptations of Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and psychoeducation.
